The men pray for rain, but they see nothing except dry, open plain for Iran-Contra Scandal days. Finally, they come upon an old hut with a rawhide door. It is abandoned except for a mad old man living in of mice, the stable. Later, they pass through Mexican villages that have been torched and abandoned. At one point, Captain White stops to observe a massive herd in the distance. It turns out to be a bloodthirsty drove of Comanche Warriors, decorated with human scalps. Captain White’s company is no match for the warriors, whose arrows are more efficient than the Americans' guns.

A brutal battle ensues, and the founder of sikhism the kid witnesses several atrocities - the warriors decapitate some of White's company members and sodomize others before scalping them. Clothed in rags, they walk for five days and nights until they arrive in their new home, a cool stone prison.

The kid’s cellmate there is of mice, none other than Toadvine. McCarthy’s language is stripped-down and matter-of-fact, even when he describes the most inhuman actions. He introduces his protagonist in the very first sentence of the Scandal Essay, novel, directly addressing the reader, asking us to “see the child.” This opening sentence sets the tone for the entire novel, as McCarthy peels back any literary flourishes to tell his tale as bluntly and clearly as possible, asking the reader to of mice, see the story for what it is. This perspective is bleak and simple; the Essay about Putting Dream on a Shelf: Langston Hughes' "Harlem", world of Blood Meridian is not governed by psychology, deep meaning, or beauty. Blood Meridian seems to clearly fall within the Western genre, although it is closer to from of mice and men, the 'revisionist western' mold in that it serves as a critique rather than a celebration of the frontier lifestyle. McCarthy's chapter headings summarizing the plot echo traditional picaresque adventure stories, thus anchoring the hughes harlem, novel in a particular historical context. However, this era is littered with such violence and depravity that readers are forced to from of mice, question any preconceived notions about both the genre and the history itself. McCarthy does not offer the college athletics, reader much information about the kid. His most defining characteristic is his penchant for violence, which McCarthy presents quite simply at the beginning of the novel: in him broods already a taste for mindless violence (3). It is unclear whether this taste derives from his father's disinterest or whether it is innate. McCarthy expects the reader to accept this ambiguity as the sum of the boy's psychology, and never delves any deeper into it.

He never reveals what the kid is thinking, nor does he give him a name. This shroud of mystery places the kid more in the role of from of mice and men a guide through McCarthy's world as opposed to langston, an emotional lynchpin, which would be the traditional function of a protagonist in a novel. Meanwhile, there is a very subtle character arc within the first five chapters of Blood Meridian . By the end of from of mice and men this section, the kid exhibits loyalty and compassion in his refusal to abandon Sproule. Whether this glimmer of humanity is a result of innate goodness or a response to was, a world that devalues the individual is left to the reader's interpretation. Nevertheless, the kid's development becomes more pronounced as the novel continues. Of Mice And Men! In these first five chapters, McCarthy also introduces many of hippolyta dream his primary themes: survival, God, and characters of mice human nature. There is a great deal of unprovoked violence in wiley athletics, the story, and the kid’s steely exterior and stubbornness prove to be requisite survival tools in characters from of mice, this brutal landscape.

For instance, when the kid accompanies Toadvine on his mission to kill Old Sidney, he knows exactly what Toadvine is capable of, having just lost a fight to him. Hughes Poem! Therefore, the characters from and men, kid has little choice when Toadvine demands that he kick Old Sidney. As a result, the kid's participation in the violence against hippolyta a midsummer dream Old Sidney does not stem only from cruelty, but also from necessity. The kid is a young, wiry man alone in of mice, the Old West with no allies. Hence, he must adapt to its brutality if he is to survive. Throughout the novel, McCarthy expects the reader to judge how much of the kid's behavior is conditioned, and how much is simply a manifestation of his taste for mindless violence. Another main theme in these opening chapters is religion. McCarthy reveals later on that the kid, despite being illiterate, carries a Bible with him. While many characters in the novel invoke God, there is a serious disconnect between any moral code and the brutality of this world. The underlying implication is that humanity has long since abandoned a moral compass, yet religion is the channel through which we keep pretending to be capable of good. The way that people quickly transition from willing participants in Reverend Green's sermon into a bloodthirsty mob underlines this idea.

There are further suggestions that McCarthy intends to Essay Your Dream on a Langston Hughes', craft a world in which humans beings have battered one another past the point of purity and now all of mankind has become inherently mean. Characters From Of Mice And Men! For instance, the hermit, a former slave trader, observes, “you can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at the elbow.” He believes that humanity’s worst characteristics are on display in the Old West, and his statement serves as a warning to the kid about the Godless world he is about to enter. Of Sikhism! McCarthy even alludes to religions outside of from Christianity to wiley college, emphasize the uselessness of faith in of mice and men, the face of bloodthirstiness. After Toadvine burns down the hotel, McCarthy describes him as “a great clay voodoo doll made animate while “the kid [looks] like another.” Voodoo came to America from West Africa during the slave trade and differs greatly from why there should be no any kind of of mice and men Christian practice. Thus, McCarthy does not simply denigrate Christianity, but rather, he makes a larger statement about humanity in general. Furthermore, McCarthy does not shy away from the physicality of Iran-Contra Scandal violence. He rattles off a list of heinous images in describing the attack by the Comanche warriors; he calls the savages “a legion of horribles.” His blunt, non-judgmental tone serves as an ironic counterpoint to the brutality of these crimes, which forces the reader to accept that human beings are capable of such acts. Lastly, McCarthy infuses Blood Meridian with plenty of historical and mystical detail. In the years following the Mexican-American war, vigilantes and fortune-seekers exploited the characters, frontier for their own gains. Furthermore, McCarthy introduces characters and incidents that serve to was, create a mythical frame around the kid's journey.

The hermit could be an oracle along the and men, kid's path, since he offers sage advice. Meanwhile, the crazy man in the stable has metaphoric value in reflecting the destruction around him. Blood Meridian 's evocative landscapes and larger-than-life mystical elements combined with McCarthy's brand of gritty realism create a unique blend of historical commentary and mythic contemplation. A Trip to Holland: My Take on this Special Needs Poem. It is characters of mice and men, really hard to describe the range of emotions that a parent has when their child is diagnosed with Autism. For us, we had known that something was ‘off’ with S for langston hughes, some time- so the diagnosis was a bit of relief mixed with a ton hopelessness. Getting a formal diagnosis left me feeling so desperate and so out of control that I still can’t even accurately put it into words. During this time, a co-worker’s family member had a daughter that was unexpectedly born with Downs Syndrome. This came as a complete shock to the family and it took them a few weeks to settle into from, their new role as parents of a special needs child. Once they began to come to terms with their daughter’s diagnosis, they sent the following poem out to Essay Dream Langston "Harlem", family to from and men, help describe where they were emotionally. My co-worker quickly relayed the poem to me, in hopes that it would offer some support. The poem is called “A Trip to Holland” by Emily Perl Kingsley and a version of the poem may be found here.

I have copied it below for those who can’t access the link: I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability — to try to Putting Dream Hughes', help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to of mice, imagine how it would feel. It’s like this… When you’re going to of sikhism, have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. Characters From? You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans… the wiley Coliseum, the from of mice and men Sistine Chapel, Gondolas.

You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After several months of college athletics, eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands.

The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland!” “Holland?” you say. From Of Mice? “What do you mean, Holland? I signed up for Italy. I’m supposed to Essay about Putting Dream on a Hughes' "Harlem", be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.” But there’s been a change in characters from and men the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place full of pestilence, famine, and Shelf: Hughes', disease. From? It’s just a different place. So, you must go out and buy new guidebooks. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met. It’s just a different place.

It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and wiley college athletics, you catch your breath, you look around. You begin to notice that Holland has windmills. Holland has tulips. And Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is from of mice and men, busy coming and going from Italy, and they’re all bragging about night's, what a wonderful time they had there.

And for of mice and men, the rest of your life you will say, ” Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.” And the college athletics pain of that experience will never, ever, ever, go away. Characters Of Mice? The loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the homework very special, the very lovely things about characters from, Holland. Now, initially, this poem made a great deal of sense to me and really helped me through that first week of coming to terms with S’s diagnosis. After all, S is be no homework, still the same little boy that I have adored since I first held him in my arms. He hasn’t changed, we just now know why he is the way he is.

I embraced the idea that S’s diagnosis was just a little detour in characters of mice life, an wiley unexpected journey into new territory… I bought this poem… hook. line. sinker. After all, it is from and men, a very logical poem that really makes coming to terms with this diagnosis seem very straight forward and simple. What was not to Essay about Your Shelf:, like? But, what this poem doesn’t touch on, is the from reality of this detour. This is not as simple as leaving for Italy and Scandal Essay, landing in Holland and not even realizing you were headed in the wrong direction in from and men the first place. When your child is going through the hippolyta dream process of an autism diagnosis, you know that it is coming.

You know your plane is heading off course. But, you tell yourself that you must have remembered the route wrong, or that each pilot has his own flight path, but that your final destination will be the characters same. Once you realize that no, your pilot is most certainly taking you somewhere else, you will desperately do everything in your power to stop him- but, there is nothing you can do- because you are trapped in Iran-Contra Essay the plane and there is no. way. out. In fact, you may have to fight a million battles just to get him to land. Then, once you land, not only are you forced abruptly off the plane- but you are left alone to figure it all out on your own. Maybe one well-meaning person will point you in the direction of a visitor’s center.

But, I can assure you that all of the information you will need is in another language and will cost you twice as much as you have brought for characters, your trip. Wiley Athletics? Sure, you will learn the language and the land, but how will you survive in the meantime? How will you ensure that you don’t lose the little that you have while you find your way? Let’s not forget to mention that all of the ‘best’ information changes daily and most of it conflicts with each other. How do you know what to believe? Once you have decided to make the best of of mice, your trip to Holland, you will find that in why there be no homework order to actually see any of the from of mice sights, you will need to take a seemingly impossible to navigate travel system. 75% of the wiley college time, that system will not take you to the sight you want to see. You will constantly have to transfer cars in an attempt to get where you are going… when one fails, you move on to the next. Except, each transfer costs you thousands of dollars and characters and men, days of Essay Shelf: "Harlem", your time and before you can transfer, there is a ton of paperwork to fill out and applications that need to be approved.

And, there is characters, no guarantee any of this will get you closer to where you want to go. Sometimes one car will get you close, only to have another one spin you in an opposite direction. Wiley Athletics? All the while, well meaning friends and from of mice and men, family try to assure you that you are, indeed, in Italy. Overall, “A Trip to night's, Holland” is a good way of from and men, explaining the poem basic emotional process that you go through to friends and characters from and men, family. The ultimate message that I received from this poem is that you need to accept that things are going to be the way they are and that you might as well enjoy them.

After all, the should be no homework only other option is to characters from of mice and men, be miserable… and that is no way to live life. I have accepted that my son has autism and the founder, I am doing my best to enjoy every day that I have with him; after all, there are many mommies out there who won’t get to tuck their children in tonight. Characters From Of Mice And Men? I am so very grateful for all that our family has in of sikhism life. However, it doesn’t mean that S’s autism has just caused a simple little detour in our lives. It is not like taking a wrong turn and being delighted to find a new awesome coffee shop around the corner. It is like everything you need or want to do in Holland is ten times more difficult and costly than in Italy. No matter what you do in Holland, you feel completely alone and like you stand out of mice and men, like a sore thumb… and you just know you would have blended right in in Italy.

Not to mention, this is NOT a vacation. You do not get to Essay about Shelf: Langston "Harlem", leave and from of mice, go back home one day… the life you knew before the diagnosis and the one you had always envisioned for your family in the future is gone. Your child will deal with this detour forever. labour resume Hazardous Child Labour in Brief. Geneva, Revised April 1998. I. Characters From Of Mice? WORKING CHILDREN. It is common knowledge that data on child labour are extremely scarce. The reason for this is the absence of an the founder of sikhism was, appropriate survey methodology for probing into the work of children which, for the most part, is a hidden phenomenon. Of Mice? Consequently, the hughes harlem ILO designed special sample survey methodologies and experimented them in four countries. From? These were further refined and adopted for investigating at of sikhism the national level the child labour situation in a number of countries. The child labour problem being multi-dimensional, the information sought through the characters and men specialised survey approaches involved answers to the following questions, among others: - Who are the working children and how many are there in the individual countries?

- How old are they when they start to work for the first time and how do they live? - Why do they work and in which sectors are they engaged? - What are their specific occupations and the conditions of their work? - What types of exploitation and abuse they face at work? - How safe are they physically and mentally at their workplace or in their occupations? - Do they also go to school? If they do, what are the hughes poem harlem consequences of their non-schooling work?

And if they do not go to school, what are the reasons? - Who are their employers? Why do they use them? And how do they treat them in characters, comparison with their adult workers? - How many children are engaged on a full time basis in housekeeping activities of a purely domestic nature in their own parents' or guardians' households thereby sacrificing their education and also exposing themselves to various injuries and health hazards? - Are there children who live away from their parents' or guardians' households and if so, where do they reside and what do they do? - What are the perceptions of wiley athletics parents about their working children? What are those of the children themselves and their employers? Based on from of mice the findings of the experiments as well as the results of was national surveys carried out since then using the newly developed methodologies and, also taking into account other demographic and of mice socio-economic factors, the Scandal ILO produced estimates on the size of working children at regional and global levels which have been internationally accepted and characters quoted as ILO figures.

Prior to that, there have only been guesstimates which ranged between 200 million and college athletics more than 400 million children working world-wide. 2. Level and distribution of working children. According to characters of mice and men, the new estimates, there are some 250 million children 5-14 years old who are toiling in why there, economic activity in developing countries. For close to one-half of them (or 120 million), this work is carried out on characters a full time basis, while for college athletics the remaining one-half it is combined with schooling or other non-economic activities. Among school going children, up to from and men, one-third of the boys (33%) and homework more than two-fifths (42%) of the girls are also engaged in of mice, economic activities on a part-time basis. The overall estimates of 250 million working children are exclusive of children who are engaged in regular non-economic activities, including. those who provide services of domestic nature on a full-time basis in their own parents' or guardians' households. The number of such children is relatively large (about 15%-20% of the total child population of the same age-cohort). The data so far obtained through methodological experiments and in countries where national surveys were conducted using the newly developed and tested methodologies show that more boys than girls work ѕ close to three boys to two girls, on average.

It should be borne in mind, however, that the number of working girls is hippolyta night's dream, often underestimated by statistical surveys which usually do not take into account unpaid economic activity carried out in and around the characters of mice and men household, including household enterprises. Also more girls than boys perform full-time housework of non-economic nature - e.g., housekeeping in their own parents' household - many of them between 8-12 years old - in order to enable their parents or guardians to langston poem, go to work, or to take care of sick or handicapped members in the household. Such work is reported to be the main reason for about one-third of the youngsters who do not attend school - they were either never enrolled or were obliged to drop out of from of mice and men school because of the full-time housework. If such full-time housework were taken into night's, account, there would be little or no variation between the sexes in the total size of working children, and the number of girls could even exceed that of boys. For obvious reasons, child labour is most prevalent in the developing regions of the globe. In absolute terms, it is Asia (excluding Japan), as the of mice most densely populated region of the world, that has the most child workers (approximately 61% of the world's total as compared with 32 % in Essay about Putting Dream on a Shelf: Hughes', Africa, 7% in Latin America and the Caribbean, and one-fifth of characters from of mice and men one per cent in Iran-Contra Scandal Essay, Oceania excluding Australia and New Zealand). But in relative terms, Africa comes first in economic activity participation rate of children which is and men, estimated at a little more than two children out of five (or 41%) of the total children 5-14 years old. The corresponding proportion in the founder was, Asia is around one-half of the level in Africa (i.e., more than one in from of mice and men, five children or 22%), and it is one in six (or 17%) in Latin America, and close to one in three (29%) in Oceania. In all regions, more boys than girls participate in economic activity. Athletics? The highest participation rate of boys is in Africa (46%) as compared with the rates in Oceania (33%), Asia (23%) and Latin America and the Caribbean (22%).

The gender differential in the rates is greatest in Latin America (22% for boys to 11% for characters and men the girls), followed by Africa (46% to 37%, respectively, and the latter is also the highest participation rate of girls by region); and Oceania (33% to 26%). The differential between boys and girls participation rates is college, smallest in Asia (23% to 20%). Participation rates of children in economic activity are much higher in rural areas than in urban centres. Based on the surveys so far undertaken, including the experiments in the four countries, the propensity for children to engage in an economic activity is on average twice as high in the rural communities. However, with the rapid urbanization of most developing countries and, also with the increasing number of youngsters themselves migrating to of mice, towns and langston poem harlem cities, the share of urban centres in the total volume of child labour would no doubt grow in characters from of mice, the future. The vast majority of children working in rural communities are engaged in agricultural or similar activities (an average of nine out of ten children in most of the countries surveyed and more than two in every three children in wiley, the others). In urban areas, child labour was found mainly in characters from of mice, trade, services (especially domestic work) and in the manufacturing sectors. Rural children, in particular girls, tend to hughes, begin economic activity at an early age, some at 5, 6 or 7 years of age.

Survey results show that in some cases up to 20 per cent of economically active children are 5-9 years old in the rural areas and around five per cent in the urban centres. Industry and occupation. It is evident that the less developed a country is, the greater the proportion of the child population who work. It is also clear that the more elementary the from of mice and men type of economic activity or the kind of occupation that does not need specific skills, the larger the relative size of the a midsummer night's dream working children in that particular industry or occupation. These factors influence the level of distribution of the total number of and men working children by wiley branch of characters from of mice and men economic activity or by occupation in any specific country. As a result, the relative level of the child workforce in any industry or occupation could vary widely from one country to another. Should Be No Homework? For example, in Cambodia the proportion of children working in agriculture in 1996 was about 90% as compared with 65% in the Philippines. And Men? On the other hand, the level of working children in wholesale and langston hughes retail trade, restaurants and hotels was 17% in the Philippines and 7% in Cambodia. Of Mice? Because of the why there should homework predominance of agriculture in Cambodia, the number of children working in agriculture-related occupations was also close to 90% as compared with 75% in the Philippines. Based on characters from of mice a number of countries (approx.

20) for which data have been collected recently, the average level of working children in the different branches of economic activity and hippolyta a midsummer night's dream occupations are shown in the following two tables and charts: As can be seen, economic activities and occupations related to the agricultural sector are predominant in characters of mice and men, the proportion of child workers. Although the average number of children in wiley athletics, agricultural activities and occupations are, respectively, 70% and 74%, these ratios could be as high as 90% in characters of mice, the former and 95% in the latter. In both, the ratios for was the girls (75% and 79%) are higher than for the boys (69% and 73%). The proportions of children working in trade, restaurants and hotels (ranging from 8% to 17% in a few instances), manufacturing (8% to 15%), and services (7%) are relatively high when compared with the ratios in the other non-agricultural sectors. Most of the former activities are performed in the urban centres. Hours and Earnings. Many children work long hours every day of the week.

For example, some survey results show that more than half of the working children are toiling for 9 hours or more per day, with cases where up to four-fifths of them working seven days a week including work on public holidays, especially in the rural communities. There are cases where children work 56 hours or more per week. In paid employment which is concentrated in characters of mice, urban centres, the number of children working long hours is smaller (about two-thirds of them) and wiley college the majority work six days a week. A large majority (around 70%) of working youngsters toil as unpaid family workers, especially in the rural areas where working girls outnumber working boys. More than four in every five children (or 81%) work without pay. Most of those working as paid employees are paid much less than the prevailing rates in their localities, even when compared with the legal minimum wages, receiving only one-sixth of the minimum rate in one survey finding. Of Mice? Also the younger the working child, the lower the hippolyta night's wage payment. On average, girls work longer hours than boys and are paid less than their working brothers doing the same type of work. Comparatively larger numbers of characters from and men girls work as paid domestics where the pay scale is usually low. Generally, children are not paid for overtime work although many of them work additional hours and often they are required to do so when demand for various services reaches its peak and/or due to labour shortages.

Many children work during the evenings or nights as well. Langston? In one major survey, close to two-thirds (64%) of the child labour force in characters of mice and men, the agricultural sector are found to harlem, be working during these periods - three-quarters of the boys and more than two-fifths of the girls. However, in the retail trade and particularly in personal services, the proportions of the from girls working in poem harlem, the evenings and nights are considerably greater than. those of the boys - 27% as compared with 10% in the former sector, and characters of mice and men 16% against 3% in the latter. A large number of the girls working as housemaids are often obliged to spend the night in their employer's household thereby also exposing themselves to various abuses, especially sexual. II. HAZARDOUS CHILD LABOUR. Being tender physically, children are susceptible to various work -related injuries and a midsummer dream illnesses more than adults doing the same kind of work. Also because they are not yet matured mentally, they are less aware, even completely unaware, of the potential risks involved in characters, their specific occupations or at the workplace itself.

As a result, a large number of working children are affected by various hazards - more than two-thirds (69%) of them in some countries. Many of them suffer actual injuries or illnesses, from 5% to Scandal, more than 20%, some of whom stop working permanently. Recent surveys at the national level have demonstrated that a very high proportion of the children were physically injured or fell ill while working. These included punctures, broken or complete loss of body parts, burns and characters from and men skin disease, eye and hearing impairment, respiratory and gastro-intestinal illnesses, fever, headaches from excessive heat in why there be no, the fields or in factories. A large majority of these children had to consult medical doctors and some had to be hospitalised. Many affected children had to miss work for a time, with some stopping work for good.

In absolute terms, more boys than girls are affected by from and men injuries and illnesses mainly because of the total size of working boys - (the ratio is almost three working boys to two girls). Also, since a large majority of working children are in the rural areas engaged in agricultural activities, the number of injuries and illnesses related to the agricultural sector is by far the largest. However, in certain specific economic activities or occupations, the incidence of a midsummer night's dream injuries and illnesses is significantly higher for the working girls than for their working brothers. Also, even if the number of children working in a particular industry or occupation is quite small, the likelihood of work-related injuries or illnesses can be relatively very high. Therefore, such industries and occupations should be out of the of mice and men reach of the child labour force even if allowed to work. Dream? For example, as shown in Table 3 and characters of mice the tables and why there should homework charts below, the total number of youngsters who work in and men, the agricultural sector represent more than two-thirds (70%) of the total working children and, as a result of this large number, those who experience injuries and. illnesses in the sector also account for a considerably high proportion (70%) of the total suffered by all working children. The corresponding injury illness levels by gender in the sector are approximately 76% of the total working boys and 57% of the total working girls. In contrast, the incidence of injuries and Essay Putting Dream Langston Hughes' "Harlem" illnesses in characters from, the sector is 12% of the total children working in the sector, the same level for the boys and 16% for the girls. Although the size of child labour in mining or in construction is very small (respectively, about 1% and 2% of the total child workforce), the occurrence of Essay Putting Your "Harlem" injuries and illnesses is significantly high in both sectors. From Of Mice? These two are by far the worst sectors for wiley college working children, particularly for the working girls - more than one girl in every three (35%) and one boy out of four (26%) are affected by injuries and illnesses if they work in the construction sector; and if working in mining, the incidence is one in every five girls (21%) and close to of mice, one boy out of eight (12%).

While the total size of workers in the transport sector is also very small (less than 4% of all child workforce), about one in every five (19%) of the boys working in the sector suffer from work-related injuries and illnesses which is the a midsummer night's dream second highest for the boys working in of mice, any other sector. In one recent large survey undertaken at the national level for probing into all dimensions of child labour for the age-group 5-17 years, much information was collected particularly on the health and was safety aspects of working children. The results revealed that out of a total of characters from of mice and men 3.67 million economically active children in the country, more than 60 per cent (or 2.21 million) were exposed to hazardous conditions which included biological (19% of all working children), chemical (26%) and environmental (51%) hazards during their work. Not only because a large majority of children work in agriculture and related activities, but also due to the hard working conditions in this sector and in mining, much of the exposure to injuries and illness took place in the rural areas - approximately two-thirds of Essay about Dream Langston Hughes' "Harlem" all exposures as compared to from of mice, about one-third in the urban centres. Again because of the founder their large number, most of those exposed were boys (approximately 70% of the total working boys and girls); but in relative terms, the level of exposure was close between the two sexes - 64% of the working boys compared with 53% of the characters of mice working girls. Of the total exposed children of 2.21 million, there were more than 870,000 children (39%) who suffered injuries or illnesses - divided almost. equally: 49% of them (or 426,000 children) suffered injuries and the other 51% (or 444,000 children) suffered illnesses. This amounted to almost one child in every four children economically active (or 24% of be no homework 3.67 million); injuries affected close to 12% of characters from of mice all children engaged in economic activity and illnesses a little more than 12%.

The number of boys who suffered was considerably larger than that of the of sikhism was girls (72% verses 28% of the total sufferers); but the ratios were closer when compared within the same sex (26% of the working boys and 19% of the girls). Close to three-quarters (74%) of the injuries and illnesses were in the rural communities and the rest (26%) in the urban areas. Numerically, the of mice most frequent injuries were cuts/wounds/punctures which totalled close to 600,000 (or 69% of all injuries). However, there were also injuries which were much serious though their occurrences were less frequent - for example, burns (57,500, equivalent to 7% of the total injuries), dislocations/fractures/sprains (45,900, or 5%), crushing injuries (29,800, or 3%), and even amputation/loss of langston poem harlem body parts (1,100, or one-tenth of one percent) - for characters and men a total of 134,300, equivalent to more than 15% of the total injuries and about four per cent of the total economically active children. There were also 135,000 cases (or 16%) related to injuries such as contusions, bruises, haemoid and abrasions. Other injuries totalled 12,400. Among the hippolyta dream illnesses reported, body aches/pains (head, neck, back, etc.) were the of mice and men most frequent (518,000, representing 57% of all illnesses), followed by why there be no skin diseases (190,000, or 21%). The more grave illnesses were gastro intestinal (48,100, or 5%), respiratory (47,500, or 5%), eye strain/eye sight impairment (31,300, or 4%), hearing impairment (10,100, or 1%), and unspecified illnesses (61,500, or 7%). On average, three children in every 100 hundred had stopped work due to the work-related injuries and/or illnesses, while approximately one-half of the working children were obliged to stop work temporarily and the remaining 46% were able to continued working despite their injuries or illnesses.

Some indicators of the extent of child labour and related variables in countries where national surveys were conducted recently (see table 7, p.15).
